Wellingborough Carnival

For the second year SDBTT was one of the official charity for the Wellingborough Carnival in July. Inspired by the previous year we decided to enter a float. It was a joint effort with 2 other families, both of whom lost daughters to brain tumours within months of us losing Claire. So with Jodie, Claire and Rosie in mind the natural choice for a theme was ‘Pink Princesses’. The lorry was kindly provided by Hornigold Haulage and, after a rather wet and stressful start, the float was transformed into a vision of pinkness. Friends of SDBTT Jodie Adams Fund, (fresh from their cross channel swim!) accompanied the float rattling collection buckets to great effect. We were delighted to be awarded 2nd prize for our float.

The Carnival Queen and her deputy were able to present the SDBTT with a cheque for £988. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this such a great event.

Wellingborough School

We are delighted and honoured that both Wellingborough Prep and Wellingborough Senior Schools chose to support SDBTT Claire Rowland Fund last year.  Claire loved her school and she would be so proud of everyone helping in this way. Many events were held on the Charity Days organised by the children. This, together with all the very energetic people who took part in the Waendal Walk, raised £3,700 in Claire’s memory. In addition the young ladies in Marsh house organised a Charity dinner and raised £300 for the Fund. We were very pleased that Angela and Neil Dickson, the founders of SDBTT, were able to visit the School to be presented with a cheque.

Other donations

Cranfield School of Management held a Dress Down Day and kindly donated the proceeds to Claire’s Fund.

Chris Watts asked for donations at his 50th birthday party for Claire’s Fund.

Faryl Smith

Faryl is a young lady who loves to sing and when she does everyone listens! Everyone was certainly listening when she reached the finals of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. Faryl has already supported Claire’s Fund and now we are delighted that she has agreed to become a Patron for the Fund. We would like to say a huge thank you and look forward to following her musical career.

Opening of the Samantha Dickson Brain Cancer Unit

On 25th June 2008 Tony and I were invited to the opening of the Samantha Dickson Brain Cancer Unit at University College London. This is a major new research facility, funded by the charity, which it is hoped will enable much greater understanding of the disease. Bringing together top academics from across the international field of neuroscience, the unit will be the UK’s first ‘centre of excellence’ dedicated to brain tumour research.

We have decided that the money raised so far for Claire’s Fund is going to be used for a fellowship grant for a scientist at the new Unit. This means that all the money loving raised in Claire’s memory will be going directly to specific brain tumour research.

Future Events

Following the success of the 2007 Glitz & Glamour Ball a date has been set for 2008. On 15th November the stage is set for a sparkling evening of fun and music for the second Glitz & Glamour Ball.  Last year the final amount raised was £22,000, which is an amazing achievement by all involved. We are all looking forward to having even more fun this year.

Claire Rowland Fund leaflet

We have produced a leaflet that explains in more detail why we set up the fund and what we hope to achieve. If you would like copies to distribute to friends, family or at work places please contact us at clairerowlandfund@hotmail.co.uk or SDBTT at enquiries@sdbtt.co.uk

Other Charities

As a family we chose to support SDBTT in the hope that further research will find a cure for this devastating illness. It was not, however a straightforward choice as there are so many charities in need of support. That is why, as well as the considerable fundraising for SDBTT Claire’s Fund, we are so grateful that other charities have being supported in her memory.

A very close friend of ours was District Governor of Kent Rotary District last year. He chose to support Make-A-Wish in memory of Claire. As a result of his challenge over £56,000 was raised by all the clubs in the district. We know how special Claire’s Make-A-Wish day was to us all and we know that this money will give a great deal of happiness to many more children and their families.

Another friend was well aware of Claire’s love of pigs. As a result of discussing fund raising ideas with her tutor group, enough money was raised to send 20 little pink piglets to families in need in Africa.

We are so grateful to every one who has supported us as this money will make a big difference to other families battling with brain tumours

Events update

Wellingborough Carnival
SDBTT Claire Rowland Fund was the official charity for the Wellingborough Carnival on 7th July. The Carnival Queen, Heidi, and her deputy, Amber, were able to present the Fund with a cheque for £730. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this such a great event.

Wellingborough 5
Six fathers from Wellingborough School ran in the Wellingborough 5 road race on 5th August to raise money for Claire’s Fund. The team name was Pink Angels and they all looked splendid in pink running outfits. There was also a junior Pink Angels team who won a trophy for the best represented school. They all did a magnificent job and the total raised for SDBTT will be nearly £2,000.

Hydroactive Women’s Challenge
Our energetic friend, Beth, from Kettering took part in the Hydroactive Event in Hyde Park on 18th September. Beth was Claire’s nanny before she started school. Beth has kindly donated her sponsorship money of £104 to Claire’s Fund so we would like to say a big thank you.

Constable Drive Jamming!
Our wonderful neighbours, Chris and Jo, held a party in their garden at the end of August and invited friend and neighbours to join in the live music sessions. There were some brilliant acts from the young musicians and some previously undiscovered talent from the neighbours! As well as being a memorable evening they raised £200 for the Fund.

Glitz and Glamour Ball
The 17th November finally arrived and, thanks to a great deal of hard work by everyone involved, the stage was set for a sparkling evening of fun and music.
The wine flowed, the dance floor was packed and the casino tables buzzed with excitement.
As the last guests left at 2.00am the evening was declared a success, both socially and financially! The amount raised is just over £21,000, which is an amazing achievement by all involved.

Faryl
Faryl is a young lady who loves to sing and when she does everyone listens!
She met Claire when they were both members of The Masquerade Choir. Faryl decided she wanted to support Claire’s Fund so started to save the money that she was given for her singing performances. In addition she complied a CD of her songs to sell to family and friends. Over the year she has accumulated the fabulous sum of £400 for the fund. We would like to say a huge thank you and to wish her all the best for her future singing career.

Thank-you
A big thank-you to everyone who has donated to SDBTT Claire Rowland Fund since it was set up last November.
Altogether you have all raised an incredible £32,500 over the last 12 months for SDBTT Claire Rowland Fund. We are so grateful to every one who has supported us as this money will make a big difference to other families battling with brain tumours

Future Events
It looks like the fundraising will continue well into 2008.
Following the success of the 2007 Glitz & Glamour Ball a date has been set for 2008. So put 15th November 2008 in your diaries and get ready to party!
David Warner is preparing to leap for Claire’s Fund on 9th February 2008. He has promised to wear a parachute when he jumps!
We are delighted and honoured that both Wellingborough Prep and Wellingborough Senior Schools have chosen to support SDBTT Claire Rowland Fund this academic year. Claire loved her school and she would be so proud of everyone helping in this way.

Other Charities
As a family we chose to support SDBTT in the hope that further research will find a cure for this devastating illness. It was not, however a straightforward choice as there are so many charities in need of support. That is why, as well as the considerable fundraising for SDBTT Claire’s Fund, we are so grateful that other charities are being supported in her memory.

Wellingborough Pre- Prep chose to support Make-A-Wish. They had a visit from the volunteer who helped with Claire’s wish who told them all about Make-A-Wish. The proceeds of their fundraising went to Make-A-Wish. We think that makes them all Little Super Stars!
Wellingborough Prep chose to support Rainbow Children’s Hospice, Loughborough. During the year they organised a variety of events and have now presented a cheque for £2,200 to Rainbows. So this makes the Prep School children Big Super Stars!

We set up a Memorial Fund in Claire’s name with Rainbows Children’s Hospice and were delighted to receive a letter recently saying that the total is now just over £1,800. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this fund including Rhiannon, who sold rainbow candles, and Millbrook Infants School who sent the donations collected at a concert.

About SDBTT Claire Rowland Fund
Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust is a registered charity set up by Neil and Angela Dickson following the death of their 16 year old daughter from a brain tumour. The charity has encouraged a number of families to set up a fund under the SDBTT ‘umbrella’.
Thus we are able to fundraise on our own behalf with the proceeds paid into our own dedicated SDBTT bank account. We can then choose how we would like this money to be used in the work of the Trust. We can decide to support a research project or the money could be used for patient support work.
