A big thank you to everybody who contributed to our fund-raising efforts at the Glitz and Glamour Ball over the last two years.

In 2008 we raised
£24,186.82 for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.  Add this to the total for 200
7 and we made a huge £46,348.82
 towards research into brain tumours.

2008 Ball Committee

Having worked tirelessly to bring you the social event of the year in 2007 & 2008, the committee are reluctant to inform you that due to other demands on our time and the current economic climate we have had to call it a day, so there will be no ball in 2009.  However, should we ever resurrect the ball at a future date, please register your interest here be it as a sponsor, donor or as a guest.

In August 2005 Claire Rowland started to complain of headaches.

After many tests and a CT scan Julie and Tony, Claire’s parents, were given the devastating news that Claire had a Glioblastoma Multiforme
tumour, one of the most malignant forms of brain tumour. Claire was given a life expectancy of 12 months. The consultant said, “I’m sorry, there is very little we can do. Take her home and make the most of the time that you have left.”

Claire died peacefully at home in her parents' arms on 20th July, 2006.

Claire’s family decided to raise money for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust (SDBTT). This is the largest dedicated brain tumour charity in the UK. The aim of the charity is to raise awareness of brain tumours and to raise funds for research to improve survivability and to help to find a cure for brain tumours.

It is their wish that other families in the future faced with the diagnosis of a brain tumour may hear their consultants say “There is a treatm
ent and the long term outlook is good”. Supporting SDBTT makes this possible.

If you wish make a donation to the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust please follow the links below.

Some little known facts:

• March is Brain Tumour Awareness month.

• More children die from brain tumours than from meningitis.

• A child diagnosed with a brain tumour has a 60% chance of survival after 5 years compared with an 85% chance of survival in leukaemia.

• 4,500 adults are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour each year in the UK, in addition to 13,500 diagnosed with a secondary tumour from other cancer.

Research into brain tumours remains desperately under-funded
